Client: Laura Shannon
Project Title: Dún Do Bhéal (Shut Your Mouth)
Objective:
This project focused on composing an authentic and emotionally resonant score for the Irish short film Dún Do Bhéal. The goal was to create music that would not only support the narrative but also reflect the cultural identity of the story. We aimed to capture the essence of traditional Irish music, blending it seamlessly with cinematic elements to achieve both authenticity and emotional depth.
Music Composition Approach:
From the beginning, authenticity was at the core of the composition. We drew inspiration from traditional Irish music forms, utilising melodic structures, modal scales, and instrumentation that reflect the country’s musical heritage. Fiddle, tin whistle, and bodhrán textures were combined with subtle modern arrangements to anchor the music within an Irish context while also elevating it for cinematic storytelling.
The score was written to align closely with the film’s pacing and emotional shifts. Gentle melodic lines underscored moments of reflection, while livelier rhythmic patterns brought energy and movement to key sequences. Each piece was carefully structured to resonate with the audience, allowing the music to feel both rooted in tradition and responsive to the film’s narrative arc.
To further ensure authenticity, we paid close attention to the tonal character and performance style of each instrument, maintaining a raw, organic feel rather than over-polishing the recordings. This approach created a musical backdrop that felt lived-in and culturally true, immersing the audience in the film’s Irish setting.
Logo Animation Music:
The closing titles featured a subtle reprise of the main theme, arranged simply with fiddle and harp. This provided a poignant and culturally resonant final impression, echoing the film’s themes of identity and voice.
Tone and Style:
The score was traditional yet cinematic—imbued with authenticity, cultural resonance, and emotional depth. It was crafted to honour Irish musical heritage while serving the storytelling needs of the film.
