University of Suffolk
The University of Suffolk wanted to create a sound design that mirrored their unique and vibrant spirit.
Client: University of Suffolk
Project Title: “See It Your Way”
Objective:
The goal of this promotional video was to showcase the vibrant atmosphere at the University of Suffolk, highlighting its diverse student life, academic excellence, and modern facilities. The sound design was essential in creating a dynamic and engaging experience, reinforcing the university’s inclusive, forward-thinking nature. Lambda Films aimed to evoke a sense of excitement, inspiration, and community, helping prospective students envision their future at the university.
Music Editing and Mixing:
In the editing and mixing process, we worked closely to ensure the music served both the narrative and the pacing of the visuals. We blended the music seamlessly with Foley and voiceover (VO) elements to create a balanced soundscape. The music was carefully faded in and out during dialogue and key sound design moments, ensuring it supported without overpowering the other elements. The transitions between music cues were smooth, helping to guide the viewer through the emotional highs and lows of the student journey.
The mixing of Foley and VO elements was critical to ensuring clarity and engagement. We made sure that natural campus sounds—like footsteps, chatter, and ambient noises—blended effortlessly with the VO, creating an immersive experience. The VO was treated with care, ensuring it remained clear and intelligible, while the Foley elements added authenticity and life to the visuals, enhancing the representation of university life.
Sound Design Approach:
Our sound design strategy focused on immersing the viewer in the lively campus environment. Killian used ambient sounds to reflect the energy of the university, with layered sounds of students walking, talking, and working in groups. These sounds were mixed to emphasise the community spirit, without overwhelming the visuals. For more intimate moments, such as one-on-one interactions with professors or study sessions, we introduced subtle Foley to create a feeling of focus and support.
In scenes highlighting the university’s advanced facilities, we used more specific sound design—like the hum of technology in labs and the tapping of keyboards in creative spaces—to showcase the modern and innovative aspects of the university. These sounds added texture to the visuals and reinforced the cutting-edge learning environment.
Tone and Style:
The overall tone of the sound design was vibrant, optimistic, and inclusive. The music and sound effects worked together to evoke feelings of excitement, ambition, and a strong sense of belonging, perfectly aligning with the university’s values of inclusivity, growth, and opportunity.
