OrangeBox
When OrangeBox came to Killian, they wanted a soundscape that was unique in tone, texture and timbre. This gave Killian an incentive to create something outside the box.
Client: OrangeBox
Project Title: “Be My Guest”
Objective:
The goal for this commercial was to showcase the transformative impact of OrangeBox’s soundproof booths. They wanted to illustrate the contrast between a noisy, chaotic world and the serene, controlled environment inside the booth. Through both sound design and music, Killian emphasised the experience of stepping into a space that allows total focus and clarity, while also highlighting the innovative engineering behind the product.
Music Integration:
For this commercial, Killian used music to guide the emotional journey of the viewer. At the start, he chose a smooth, atmospheric track that reflected the overwhelming noise of the outside world. The music featured subtle, building tension to mirror the chaotic soundscape—city sounds, chatter, and other distractions.
Once the character enters the OrangeBox booth, we transitioned the music to a minimalist, ambient synth composition. This shift symbolised the immediate sense of calm and isolation that the soundproof booth provides. We opted for synth textures that were smooth and clean, reflecting both the modern technology and serene atmosphere of the space. The shift from dynamic, chaotic music to calming synths mirrored the transition from noise to silence, creating an emotional impact that resonated with the viewer.
Throughout the commercial, the synths were used to maintain a subtle, yet engaging presence. Killian crafted the music to evolve alongside the visuals—rising in intensity when highlighting the disruption of external noise and then easing back into a gentle, ambient sound to reflect the silence inside the booth. The pacing of the music was carefully timed to match the visual transitions, ensuring that the music complemented the progression of the story, while never overpowering the sound design.
Sound Design Approach:
Sound design was at the heart of this commercial, with a focus on capturing the stark contrast between the noise outside the booth and the silence within. Alongside Lambda Films, we began by layering sounds of the outside world—traffic, people talking, distant construction, and the hum of city life. These sounds were intentionally busy and chaotic to create a sense of auditory overload. This was crucial to set up the need for a solution like the OrangeBox booth, emphasising how overwhelming the external world can be without a soundproof sanctuary.
When the character steps inside the booth, we designed a seamless transition from chaos to calm. The external sounds were abruptly cut off, and we used a combination of high-frequency sweeps and soft, modulating synth pads to simulate the sudden quiet and isolation of the booth. These synthetic sounds served to highlight the booth’s technology at work, giving the impression of a high-tech, controlled environment that removes all external disturbances.
To ensure the transition felt tangible, we subtly introduced the sound of the booth’s technology—an almost imperceptible hum that represents the booth’s active soundproofing system. This low, consistent hum reinforced the sense of the booth’s high-tech functionality without interrupting the serenity of the space. The final result was a soundscape that allowed the viewer to ‘feel’ the isolation and peace inside the booth.
We also used carefully placed digital, synthetic sound cues to represent the modern technology behind the OrangeBox booth. These elements helped underscore the advanced engineering without being too intrusive, blending seamlessly into the overall atmosphere of the soundscape. These elements provided texture and depth, making the experience of being inside the booth feel immersive and futuristic.
Logo Animation Sound Design:
As the commercial concluded with the OrangeBox logo animation, we added a sharp, clean synthetic sound to reinforce the modern and precise nature of the brand. The sound was minimal, reflecting the product’s simplicity and efficiency, but it was impactful enough to leave a lasting impression of the brand’s technological sophistication.
Tone and Style:
Throughout the commercial, the sound design was sleek, modern, and immersive. We crafted every sound with the intention of reflecting the high-tech nature of the OrangeBox soundproof booth. The music and sound design together highlighted the transformation from chaos to clarity, offering an experience that mirrored the product’s ability to provide peace and focus in an otherwise noisy world. The tone was calm and focused, conveying a sense of calm and technological precision.
